In life I really like to keep lists of things. When I hear about a cool book from someone I go right to Amazon and I add it to my wish list. When I hear some great music I don’t have a way to do that so I simply end up buying the album right off the bat from Amazon or iTunes. For movies I use Netflix. But sadly they are missing a lot of opportunities.
Whenever I think about consuming a movie, my first thought is Netflix. If it’s a preview of a new movie I immediately go to and ‘Save’ it to my Netflix queue. If it’s an old movie I simply add it to my queue for later viewing.
What Netflix is missing is the part around the ‘Save’ functionality. They should capitalize on this. First off they can track this and sell this data (anonymously) to the studios so they can see where the interest is .. (kind of like nielsen). Secondly they should make it more easy for me to save these items. I was thinking of a Shazam type app for my phone that would sample a movie preview and then put it up on my queue. Lastly, they should partner with some company like Flixter to market live showings of movies on my Save list to me (opt in of course).
The point is that I put movies on my Save list that I’m interested in but dont want to go right away and see.. That is something that the company can use and hopefully when they do it can benefit me the customer.
